Hidden MACD Divergence: When Price Makes a Higher Low but Momentum Does Not
Hidden divergence shows up during trends — the opposite of regular divergence, which often appears near reversals. Because price continues making higher lows in an uptrend (or lower highs in a downtrend), many traders miss the MACD histogram failing to confirm that continuation.
Hidden bullish: higher low in price, lower low in histogram
In an established uptrend, price pulls back and forms a higher low. You expect momentum to strengthen. Instead, the MACD histogram prints a lower low at that pullback. Momentum is weakening even though the trend structure remains intact. This often precedes a deeper pullback or trend pause — not necessarily a full reversal.
We mark the histogram peaks and troughs, not just the MACD line crossover. The histogram shows the distance between MACD and signal line — it often turns before the lines cross.
Hidden bearish: lower high in price, higher high in histogram
In a downtrend, a lower high on price paired with a higher high on the histogram suggests selling pressure is easing. Again, this is context for a pause or counter-trend bounce, not an automatic long entry.
Why RSI alone misses some of these
RSI can remain in mid-range during a trending pullback, offering no clear second peak to compare. MACD histogram, because it measures momentum change rate, sometimes shows the divergence more clearly. That is why our intensive teaches both — and why day two includes side-by-side comparison exercises.
Volume check
Hidden bullish divergences on weak volume pullbacks are common and often mean little. We look for declining volume on the second pullback compared to the first. Rising volume into a histogram divergence sometimes indicates distribution — context that changes how we write the thesis.
Marking drill
Choose a stock in a clear weekly uptrend. Find two pullbacks that form higher lows on price. Compare histogram lows at those dates. If the second histogram low is lower, document it as a hidden bullish divergence and note what would invalidate the read (typically a close below the first pullback low).
